Looking ahead to 2016 season

2016 has started well for the Giants. There has been some changes on the coaching staff. Last year´s special teams coach Stefan Karkulahti takes responsibilities for defensive coordinator. Coach Karkulahti has a long history with the Giants. He has been with the club from 1979 and has been coaching the team also during its prime time in Maple league during the 90´s.

On defensive side Ari Evwaraye coaches defensive line, Jari Mellin linebackers and Olli Kujala defensive backs. On offense Rikhard Ståhlberg coaches offensive line and Roope Kolehmainen wide receivers. Samuel Orvomaa will continue as head coach and offensive coordinator.

Iron Bowl

Since beginning of the year Giants have been practising pads on. Team has 3 OTA´s (organised team activity) during a week. Roster is at the moment about 40 players and Giants are able to pull good practices with full team sessions to spice up the individual practices.

Giants goal for the 2016 season is to win the Iron Bowl. From last year Kuopio Steelers (which won the Iron Bowl last year) got promoted to I-division. Also two teams were promoted to II-division. Pori Bears and Nokia Ghosthunters played in the final game of III-division (Tin Bowl) last year and made their way to compete for the Iron Bowl with Mikkeli Bouncers, Hanko Sun City, Raisio Oakmen and the Giants.

Giants have also continued their cooperation with university team NDU (National Defense University) Black Knights. NDU´s players are seen at Giants practice on regular basis and handful of them have already signed a contract with the Giants. University league is played before Giants regular season kicks off.
